It is essential for people to know the condition of their kidney health and what measures they can take to keep them healthy. Patients with chronic kidney disease need to take the following measures to maintain kidney function for a longer period.

The education of kidney patients (including practical advice on diet and lifestyle) should be enhanced so that patients, their caregivers, and their support systems can be empowered to achieve health outcomes and life goals.

Information related to kidney health care providers and patient organizations should be presented according to different levels of health literacy.

Primary care physicians should be encouraged and supported to improve the identification and management of patients across the entire spectrum—from prevention and early detection to secondary and tertiary prevention and kidney failure care.

The general public should be encouraged to adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle (access to clean water, exercise, a balanced diet, quitting tobacco, and protection from climate change) to maintain good kidney health. To keep the kidneys healthy, reduce daily salt intake to 5-6 grams per day. Prioritize home-cooked meals over outside food, especially junk food, as weight gain can also contribute to kidney damage.

Quit smoking and ensure adequate water intake. Experts recommend that an adult should drink 2 to 4 liters of water daily. This helps flush out minerals that form stones in the urine. These minerals can accumulate in the kidneys and form stones due to insufficient water intake.

Remember: A little negligence can lead people to kidney damage or kidney diseases. However, if someone develops kidney disease, timely diagnosis and early treatment can cure the condition.

Currently, the major issue faced worldwide is kidney damage caused by high blood pressure and diabetes. Seventy percent of kidney failures occur due to delayed or improper treatment of these two diseases, the treatment for which is either dialysis three times a week or a kidney transplant—both costing millions of rupees. The entire world is troubled by this menace and seeks to address its causes.
